RESOURCE SMART & HUMAN CENTRIC DESIGNED SCHOOLS

“All students should have the opportunity to attend schools that sustain the world they live in; enhance their health and well-being; and prepare them for 21st century careers”

Sustainability in K-12 Education Campuses

The b2bResourceSmart & HumanCentric Schoolsinitiative has been created to assist K-12 Schoolsand Colleges become centres of excellence insustainability and resource efficiency in theeffective managment and operation of all schoolcampus buildings. In today’s world where climatechange is undeniable, electricity prices ncreasing, water scarcity becoming more common and waste pollution clogging our landflls and oceans, transmitting to the next generation and futureleaders of our society in how to better manageour resources is now imperative more than ever.Acknowledging the world we will be handing over
to them will be facing challenges never beforeencountered in our history. Arming our childrenwith the knowledge and tools now during theirformative years of their schooling will enablethem an awareness, appreciation and understanding of Sustainability and the mportant role it plays in their future. Through sustainable technology and solutions installation we can ensure Australia’s school campuses get as close to NET ZERO Energy, Water, Waste & Consumption as possible and will serve as a real and living example of Sustainability in a school campus setting.

Designing for Sustainability

Whether an organisation is guided by sustainability principles or reducing cost structures and overheads, smarter management of valuable resources such as energy, water and waste for commercial operations is critical. With recent focus on Energy due to volatile price rises and aging infrastructure, managing Energy consumption has been an obvious place to start in reducing operational overheads. By focusing on smarter resources management in thefirst instance is a good place to start. However by taking a broader and more holistic view of the “Sustainability” umbrella, other areas in school campus management with student engagement begin to dove tail into mix also. A Green, Sustainable and ResourceSmart School is about more than curriculum, more than programming and more than bricks and mortar. It’s a school that supports global sustainability in every way. A green school begins with the future in mind, designing a learning experience for students that will prepare them to lead the world toward a healthier, cleaner, more sustainable future.

Environmental Impact of Campus Buildings

Reducing environmental impact includes reducing energy and water use, cutting back on fossil fuel used in transportation, reducing waste headed to lanfill and protecting natural habitats. These actions have an effect on humans and the Earth: WE KNOW....
energy
Cutting energy usage in buildings reduces energy load on power plants, reducing carbon emissions and other environmental impacts of power generation... View More
water
Cutting water usage in buildings reduces aquifer depletion, protects freshwater habitats and reduces the energy used to treat and transport water... View More
waste
Reducing waste going to landfill saves open land for habitat and other purposes and reduces water and soil contamination. We also know the effort of reducing landfill waste encourages direct reuse and puts more material in the recycling stream... View More
design
Design of schools to meet minimum code performance tends to minimize initial capital costs but delivers schools that are not designedspecifically to provide comfortable, productive, and healthy work environments for students and faculty.. View More
Health & Wellbeing
Protecting student and teacher health includes ensuring a clean and healthy indoor environment in the school, as well as providing programs and services for good nutrition and physical activity... View More
Literacy & education
Teaching students about sustainability and the environment gives them the tools they need to solve the global challenges we face now and in the future. Education that supports this type of literacy includes both... View More
green procurement
Green procurement means reviewing the items and services your School buys regularly and selecting ones with lower environmental impact. Green principles can apply to all the major items of equipment, energy, water... View More
Green schools provide a range of additional benefits including reduced teacher sick days, reduced operations and maintenance costs, reduced insured and uninsured risks, improved power quality and reliability, increased state competitiveness, reduced social inequity, and educational enrichment. There is insufficient data to quantify these additional benefits, but they are substantial and, if calculated, would substantially increase the recognized financial benefits of greening schools.

"Building healthy high performance and resource efficient school buildings is now far more fiscally prudent and lower risk than building conventional, inefficient and unhealthy school buildings"
